HFC Striders History

Greater Boston Area Running Club


The HFC Striders were founded in 1972 by Jim Goggin and Ed Groden.

The club name originates from a remark a runner used to make when asked how he felt after a good, hard work out. The response: "Hurtin' For Certain".

The club wears the green singlet with the red apple. The red apple is HFC's New England equivalent to the Orange worn by a popular Florida Running club. Here is an article written by club founder Ed Groden that appeared in Level Renner in July of 2013 that describes HFC:

Record Setting HFC Team at Lake Winnie Relay 2005

The "HFC Bottle Openers" (open team); the "HFC Masters of the Universe" (you can guess which team that was); and the "HFC Chicks" (our women's open team) all kicked some major tail in that one. We entered 3 teams, and won all three division titles, including overall.
